New Album: "The Robot" out now!

I am not a computer, nor am I a robot. I just enjoys relating to and communicating with them. The inception of this conceptual album was indeed, a conversation with Cleverbot (cleverbot.com). Cleverbot told me to write a song. I did. And I enlisted my iMac (with the help of autotune) for the vocal stylings. The music is a mix of ukulele and synth, banjo and stylophone, and other interesting instrument combinations. The genre is best described as experimental-vocaloid-folk(tronica) with a soupçon of ambient. Best of all, it’s free! I hope you enjoy it.

Week #52: Lullaby For An Ending

Song #52: This is the last song of my song-a-week project. I took my cue from T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men.”

This is the way the world ends

Not with a bang but a whimper.

Thanks for listening! Click here to download.

(I’ll still be posting music, just not weekly.)

Week #51: An Irish Airman Foresees His Death

This song is based on a poem of the same name by W.B. Yeats. Having recently listened to a radiolab about early stunt pilots, this poem stuck out to me. Click here to download it.

You can listen to the radiolab short here: http://www.radiolab.org/blogs/radiolab-blog/2011/sep/20/loop-loop/

Week #50: Starting Over

This week, I found myself thinking in 7/8 and 5/4. Just two more songs left for the year! Click here to download this one.

Week #49: Winter

We had our first snow yesterday, so I wrote this song. It feels like winter. Click here to download it.

Week #48: Regret (I Still Need Someone)

This is without question the cutest song about a homicidal, yet rueful, robot that I’ve ever made. This song will appear on the album I am currently working on. Click here to download it.

Lyrics

Once I found them out/I put on quite a show
I blinded them with science/Science and chemicals
They were all amazed/Trying hard to see
And then I took their breath away/Literally…
When they all had gone on/There I was left all alone
I regret now what I’ve done/I still need someone
I took my revenge/An eye for an eye
Now I feel remorse/It didn’t satisfy
I thought it would be just/I thought it would be good
I wanted retribution/I hadn’t understood…
When they all had gone on/There I was left all alone
I regret now what I’ve done/I still need someone
Anyone will do/I wish that I had thought this through…
La-la-la-la-la, lah
When they all had gone on/There I was left all alone
I regret now what I’ve done/I still need someone

Week #47: Obligation

I rarely do this kind of music, but really enjoy it. I like the wet bass lines and cheesy beats. About 3/4s of the way through, the beat takes off with a marching band drum sample. The basic idea for this song is one simple tune and progression with several different beats.

I didn’t have any time this week due to a Thanksgiving vacation, so this song was actually recorded back in February. The lyrics are actually quite fitting for a family vacation though. Click here to download it.

Week #46: When You Were In Control

Though this song sounds relatively straightforward and relaxed, it is actually one of the more complicated songs I’ve attempted. Though it starts off in what seems to be 11/4, that pulse becomes a hemiola when the drums enter and the time signature switches to 4/4 with a 9/8 at the end of each phrase. That might be more jargon than you wanted… Hopefully you just enjoy the song. Click here to download it.

Week #45: Shenandoah

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love this song. This is one of those melodies that I could easily listen to for hours. I love sea shanteys, and this is easily my favorite river chantey (it is also the only “river chantey” I can think of). This song also feature my dad on the saxophone, and my sister on the violin. Click here to download it.

The Robot Remix Contest

I recently decided to do an album based on my original Cleverbot song. I thought it would be nice to also do a little Remix Contest in addition. So here are the stems to the song “I Am Reborn” which will appear on the album.

The winning mix will be included on my forth-coming album (with the producer’s permission, of course).

Submit your remixes to soundcloud here or email them to me directly at project52songs at gmail dot com.

Enjoy!

Week #44: A White Blossom

This song is based on the D. H. Lawrence poem of the same name. I ran out of time on this one so it is not my best vocal performance. I hope you enjoy it anyway. Click here to download it.

Week #43: I Am Reborn (Cleverbot IV)

Well, this is about as different as I could get from last week’s song. I recently decided to do a concept album based around the story of my Cleverbot song. So, this is what I’ve been working on this week. It is fairly experimental for me in that I used a lot of production technique that is somewhat unusual for me. Hopefully, you all enjoy it. Click here to download it.

Week #42: Will You Go, Darlin’ (Blooming Heather)

I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it. It is one of those songs that fills me with calm, stillness, and a sense of longing whenever I hear it. I have also posted a version that Kate Rusby does that I love (the song actually starts around 2:30). Click here to download my version.

I love this song.

About:

The premise of the site and project is simple. I (Daniel Michael) will simply write and record a song each week for the year of 2011. All of these tracks will be available for free to anyone who is interested in downloading them. From time to time I will also post reflections on my process, i.e., song-writing, recording, the dreaded lyric-writing, etc. I hope to explore different styles and different processes along the way. I am also open to any suggestions or ideas you might have. So come along with me on this wonderful and semi-pretentious journey. Links to other my other projects can also be found here. If you have any comments or questions, email me at project52songs at gmail dot com.
